Mensching, Henry and Clara |
Description |
Henry and Clara Mensching were married October 18, 1897. Henry and Clara moved to Iowa shortly after their wedding where their two children, Herbert and Laura, were born. They resided in Iowa for 17 years before returning to Illinois in 1914 and purchased farm land that Clara’s father, John Philipp Laseke, owned near Arlington Heights. Clara (nee Laseke) Mensching was born June 6, 1874, to John Philipp and Bertha (nee Bahe) Laseke. John Philipp was born in Germany in 1830 and immigrated to the United States in 1847. He moved to the Arlington Heights area about 1853 to farm and married his second wife Bertha in 1872. Bertha Bahe Laseke was born in Germany in 1853 and immigrated to the United States in 1871. Bertha and John had 13 children, four sons: Philipp C., Henry, Chris, and Albert; and six daughters: Clara Mensching, Alice Heuer, Bertha Meyer, Emma Minnick, Lizzie, and Elsie Russell. Three children died in childhood. John Philipp Laseke died in 1905 at the age of 75. Bertha Laseke died in 1923 at age 65. Henry Mensching was born August 13, 1870, in Elk Grove, Illinois, to Friedrick and Mary Mensching, both of German descent. Henry was one of seven children including three brothers - William, Friedrick, and Herman; and three sisters - Mary, Sophie, and Miena. Henry died November 19, 1917, at the age of 47 from heart trouble. He was buried in Fremont, Iowa, at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery near his former home. Clara continued to reside in Arlington Heights, for a time at 404 North Douglas Avenue. She died December 18, 1956, at the age of 82. Laura Mensching, Henry and Clara's daughter, was born July 30, 1904, and died February 22, 1928, at the age of 24 from heart trouble caused by an infection. Herbert Mensching, Henry and Clara's son, was born about 1898 and married Mathilda “Tillie” Wilke. Tillie was a member of the Wilke family, one of the original settlers of Arlington Heights. Herbert and Tillie had a son, Stanley, and a daughter, Loraine Ann. Tillie owned and operated a downtown Arlington Heights ladies apparel shop, Lorraine Anne Shop, named after her daughter for 30 years. Herbert died in 1982 and Tillie in 2000.
