In this 1978 photo , Elmer Crane is putting up a flag in front of his house. After two flags were stolen from a pole in front of his 626 North Belmont Avenue house , he dug out a third in time for the Fourth of July. Elmer Crane was born in Iowa about 1894 to Lincoln and Laura Crane. His father was born in Iowa and his mother was born in Illinois. He had three sisters , Clara , Doris and Jesse , and one brother , Clifford. He came to Arlington Heights in 1903. He married Della Scharringhausen on June 17 , 1925. When he was still in grade school , he worked for Paddock Publications cleaning up the floors. Doris also worked for Paddock Publications from 1910 to 1919. In 1909 , Elmer took a full-time job with the railroad. He served during World War I and, in 1919 , after the war he went back to work at the newspaper. Eventually he went to work as a superintendent in the traffic department for the U. S. Steel Company and worked there until he retired. Elmer was active in the community. He was a board member of the Arlington Heights Park District from 1932 to 1950 and helped develop the first parks in the village including Recreation Park. He was a member of the village planning commission and a member of the Arlington Heights-Wheeling Township Cemetery Board. He was a past master of the Arlington Heights American Legion Merle Guide Post 208. He was also a 25-year member and past secretary of the Arlington Heights Lions Club. During World War II , he served on the local draft board. He died at age 86 in January 1980. Della Crane died April 24 , 1980 , at age 91. She had been a member of the Arlington Heights Chapter #992 of O.E.S.(Order of the Eastern Star). She was also active member of First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights.
