THE MERCHANDISE MART, is the largest building in the world and the largest single development of air rights in the world. It is located at Wells Street and faces on the north bank of the Chicago River. It is 18 stories in height with the tower rising 24 stories, and cost $32,000,000. It is built over the Northwestern tracks and on the ground level is a modern freight station. It is a miniature city with superimposed streets, consisting of corridors having a total length of six miles. The building was built by Marshall Field & Company.
