Reflections on Veteran’s Military Service:
This is a picture of Cliff Babbs, holding a large crab, on the USS Tillamook, a seagoing tug. Its tour was the Aleutian Islands. Once of their responsibilities was to bring food to the Eskimo settlements on the islands farthest from the main land during winter months. The crew would hunt caribou and catch Alaskan king crab, shrimp and other cold water fish to help the Eskimos. Our Papa thought it was a strange thing for sailors to go hunting and fishing as part of their duty. Our papa also served on a destroyer - USS McDermott and did a tour of duty to Korea.
