Resolution Honoring Samuel Gove
Ms. Sloan read the following resolution:
We, the Members of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, express our deep gratitude and
profound respect to Samuel K. Gove for his exemplary public service to college and university students,
to the higher education community, and to the citizens of Illinois.
As a Member since May of 1998, Sam has been a powerful and insightful advocate for the value
of higher education in the civic life of the state and the economic well-being of its citizens. He has served
with distinction and dedication on various Board committees, including the Committee to Review
Priorities, Productivity and Accountability and on the Committee to Study Part-time and Nontenure-
Track Faculty at Public Institutions. Sam has been tireless in working to eliminate diploma mills, in
challenging the educational quality of online institutions, and in fostering a stronger review of
independent institutions. Sam should also be applauded for his work with students. He has always made
time to speak with student groups and give them his insightful opinion on topics relevant to their lives.
Sam has demonstrated a forceful, yet respectful, style of leadership, raising questions and
challenging conventional wisdom with carefully thought-out opinions and a sense of humor. The Board
has appreciated his perspective on issues of academic quality, college affordability, and student learning.
The higher education community has benefited from Sam’s vision and his values.
The Board will miss Sam’s calm advocacy, his passion for the interests of students, and his sense
of humor. Enriched by his service on the Board, we wish him well in his future endeavors.
The Illinois Board of Higher Education unanimously accepts and endorses the Resolution
Honoring Samuel Gove.
