“Taste of Summer” Saturday, 1 July 2006 10:00 am-4:00 pm Join us for a taste of summer, see the gardens in bloom
and learn about the types of vegetables available to the mid 19th century gardener on Saturday, July 1st. Heirloom
vegetables are in many cases much different than those available today - compare the differences between these and
their modern counterparts. Afterwards, join us for an old fashioned corn boil and sample the fresh sweet corn.
Charleston 4th of July Parade: Plan on joining us for the annual parade in Charleston honoring our independ-ence.
In the 19th century, the observance of our nation’s birthday was the most important holiday of the year, sec-ond
only to the observance of George Washington’s birthday. Matt Cassady and the volunteers in the Summer
Youth Program will decorate the wagon for the parade with the theme of ‘The Oregon Trail’ Parade begins at
1:00 pm on the Charleston Square, Participants should arrive no later than 12:45 pm
Bagelfest Parade: Saturday, 22 July 2006. Matt Cassady and the volunteers in the Summer Youth Program will
decorate the wagon for the parade with the theme of ‘The Oregon Trail’ Mattoon residents are especially encour-aged
to ’Go West’ with us! Parade begins at 10:00 am, please meet at the County Market parking lot in
Mattoon by 9:30 am.
