Oct. 10, 1929,
Mr. Elmer C. Smith, Carpentersville, Ill.
Dear friend Elmer:
As I recollect, the Dundee Township Library was started by popular subscription in 1873 or 1874 and was located in the A. S. Hollister office, with Lucy Blow in charge.
Later it was moved to drug store which was owned by Dr. Cleveland and Dr. Test and located on the northwest corner of First and Main Streets, I was an apprentice of the doctors at that time and had charge of the library.
A few years later the library was moved to the drug store which is now owned by Less Bond and I was appointed librarian. Then it was taken to the Sinclair drug store and afterwards to the Opera House Building with Elsie Baumann Le Sourd in charge and from this location to its present location in the City Hall.
I cannot remember the exact dates nor the time when Jennie Kirst Browning and your wife were librarians and am not sure but think that after the library was started, it was maintained by a township tax.

Dear Friend Fred- Undoubtedly you think I have forgotten all about the 5oth year of our libraries existence (sic) but it is not so, as my wife and I have discussed it more or less since our last meeting. After a lapse of 5o years things do not come back to you as readily as one could wish-, especially days and dates, libraries and locations in their consecutive order.
However on Sundey (sic) afternoon (Sep 29) my wife and I drove to Elgin to see H. J. Bauman as we thot he was more familiar with the early history of our library than any one else. We did not find him at home so I tried later to get him by phone but central told me his phone had been removed. Still believing him to be our best source of information I wrote him a letter which I mailed to him Monday morning (Sep 30) to his Elgin address and a reply
