About 4:30 Tuesday afternoon the tire alarm of one long blast, followed by tive shorts, • warned Flora citizens that the flre was in District No. 6, the north 'side res¬ idence section.
The nfwly organized flre depart¬ ment mstde a aulck response and were on hands and ready with the hose Within ten minutes. The scene proved to be the fine residence of Jack Hodges, on Locust and Ninth Streets, and the fire had made such headway that the roof and second story  were seething with flame.
Not daunted by the big start the fire had on them, the hustling tire laddies went to the work In earnest and finally subdued the flames, but the greater part ot the house was a wreck by the time the flre was under eontrol. It Is said that 100,000 gallons of water was used In fight¬ ing the flre.
Mr. Hodges was at home—out in the yard, and discovered flames breaking through the roof and gave the alarm. Mrs. Hodges was attend¬ ing exercises at the school house. Nolan Hodges, brother of Mr. Hod¬ ges, was asleep upstairs and barely escaped with no vther belongings aave his clothes.
The tire Is suposed to have been caused by electric light wires, but of this there is no definite proot.
The Hodges home was one of Flora's prettiest bungalows, was orected at a cost ot several thousand 4loIlar8 and it is hard to estimate the loss. Mr. Hodges had $3200 Insur¬ ance on the building, but nothing on the contents. Nothing was saved «xcept trom the first floor rooms.
The fire department had their first severe test and the boys handled tho ¦work in fine shape and are deserv¬ ing of great praise for the fighting spirit displayed against almost in¬ surmountable odds. Every citisen ot Flora should be a booster for the encouragement.
