He also discusses his family history and Welsh background, childhood experiences in Herrin, Illinois, education, naval experiences before and during WWII, service as alderman, as well as his life after the Senate. References are made to John L. Lewis, coal mining, the Birger-Shelton gang wars in southern Illinois, Ku Klux Klan, and numerous political figures. |
