Patrick and Margaret Bolan Kinsella History 1829-1916 Patrick Kinsella was born October 18, 1829 in King's (Offaly) County, Ireland, one of eight children. He came to America in 1853. He married Margaret Bolan, born May 31, 1836 in Queen's (Laois) County, Ireland, May 3, 1856 in Lexington, Kentucky. Their first child was born in Lawrence County, Illinois as they moved northward. Their third child was born in Bloomington, Illinois. It is thought they farmed for two or three years on one of the Funk farms on the Bentown Road, and then moved near Holder. November 30, 1864 they bought 160 acres of land, the S.W. quarter of Section 25, Towanda Township for $10 an acre from the McCullough Estate. This became the home place and in 1977, the home of Michael and Mary Kay Maloney Kinsella. November 18, 1882 Patrick and Margaret acquired 160 acres of Section 25 for $8800 from Mary Kittera Snyder. 80 acres was a bounty gift to Martin Paxton for service in the Florida War 1850. He returned it to the General Land Office and it was given to Kersey Fell. Fell sold it in 1853 to Elizabeth Wilson for $160 who sold it to Mary Snyder for $1.00. Their children are: *Anna Regina, born March 13, 1857, never married and lived with either of her sisters, Mary O'Rourke or Jane Flanagan. *Mary Elizabeth, born November 5, 1859, married Patrick O'Rourke and lived on the Blue Mound Farm near Fletcher. After her husband's death eight years after their marriage, she moved to Bloomington to educate her daughters, Margaret, Mary and Anne. All three graduated ISNU, They are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington. *Ellen Agnes, born August 13, 1861, married Daniel Gould and farmed near Barnes. Ellen and Daniel had two daughters, Mary and Catherine who did not marry. Ellen continued to manage the family farm while living in Bloomington. *John, born May 22, 1863, married Estelle Hannigan, born March 14, 1881, April 25, 1906. *Jane Theresa, born May 13, 1865, married Patrick Joseph Flanagan. Their children were John and Mary, known as Marie. They lived on Walnut Street in Bloomington and kept a neighborhood grocery. They moved to Chicago after Patrick's death where Marie studied comptometer and worked in railroad offices. John Flanagan was ordained a Jesuit priest and taught many years. Father John Flanagan later did parish work--always in Chicago. *Michael was born February 27, 1867. He married Margaret Larkin, born May 2, 1868, February 23, 1897 (see Michael Kinsella History). *Rebecca , born December 13, 1868, married John Henry Carmody November 1894 in St. Patrick's Merna. She and her husband ran a grocery store in Merna and lived next door. Rebecca and Jack Carmody had 3 children who died at birth or shortly after and one son, Daniel Joseph, born April 1903, graduated Merna Grade School, Trinity High School, St. Mary's College in Kansas and Marquette University. He married Katherine Fitzgerrell. Dan graduated Worsham's College of Morturary Science in Chicago and owned the Carmody Funeral Home in Bloomington. * William Henry was born July 18, 1870 and married Catherine Kinsella (not a relative) from the Lexingon area on September 27, 1897. Descendants of Patrick and Margaret's son William have lived in the home place since 1905 when Patrick and Margaret moved to Bloomington and William's family moved to the farm. William and Catherine both died young, she in 1913 and he in 1920, leaving their son Bill to take care of the farm and his younger brothers and sisters. *Margaret Lucy, born April 9, 1872, married James Michael Larkin, son of James and Juilia Hogan Larkin on October 17, 1894 at St Patrick's Church, Merna. They lived just north of the Larkin family home. Their children were Julia, Anna, James, Ambrose, Margaret Mary, Jerome, Martha Lucile and Ethelreda. They moved to Bloomington in 1933. They are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Merna. *Catherine Frances, born May 9, 1874, graduated Bloomington High School and taught. She joined the Dominican Order in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin and took the name Sister Ethelreda. She is buried at the Mouind in Sinsinawa. *Martha Alice, born May 12,1877, never married and made her home with Jane Flanagan or Mary O'Rourke. Mary, Ellen Jane, Rebecca, Margaret and Catherine were all teachers. John, Michael and William all farmed. Margaret Bolan Kinsella died November 13, 1907 and Patrick died May 16, 1916. They are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington. Anna and Martha are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in the Kinsella plot.

Description | This is a written history of Patrick Kinsella, born in Ireland in 1829, his wife Margaret Bolan and their eleven children. Patrick immigrated in 1853 and purchased his first farm in Towanda Township in 1864. Photographs of Margaret and Patrick are included. All of the children are included in the history. Mary, Ellen, Rebecca, Margaret and Catherine were all teachers. John, Michael and William, the sons, were all farmers. |
