Hobo's Get A Job!?
By Kim Skaja
On Saturday, May 4, there will be a traditional dinner show featuring Hobo Stew. It will be at 6pm. A second show has been added, Sunday, May 5 at 2pm. During the Sunday show, only dessert will be served. An evening filled wilh music, laughter, corny jokes and good old fashioned fun is promised for those attending the First Congregational Church's 31st almost annual Hobo Show.
The Hobo Show traditionally started as the brain child of the youth fellowship of 1964. The entire cast was comprised of high school students. Chuck Rulh, one of the early hobos, remembers those early years fondly. The stage was a small affair, maybe 10' x 10', and though some of the acts may have been a little rough, the kids were enthusiastic and everyone had fun. As Chuck remembers it, the menu has remained pretty much unchanged through the years, with Hobo Slew being the main alU"aclion.
At some point in that hazy distant past, the choir members took charge of the Hobo Show, and it became a more professional production. Monies raised from those productions funded the purchase of handbells. Those bells have become a beaudful part of the church's music and well appreciated by all of the congregation.
The Hobo Show became a tradition that far exceeded the confines of the church. In fact, it was so popular that several performances had to be held to accommodate its many fans. Sadly, in 1995, the show was canceled due to many unforeseen events. As 1996 dawned, it again looked like there would be no Hobo Show. Members of the church's current youth group, Krista Jurs, Loran Lilly, Eric and Emily Ruth were so concemed by this turn of events that they decided lo do something about it. Thus was bom the 31st almost annual Hobo Show.
This year's production has come full circle, like the first show, the current cast will be entirely comprised of youth. Cast members ages range from 7 to 17. The driving force behind the production is eighth grade student, Krista Jurs. Adult musical directors are Paul Ahrendt, Tim Wills and Tracey Schwartz. The kitchen crew will be led by Jan Hoeft and Helen Ruth. Tickets and programs were produced through the efforts of Trudy Jurs and Lynette Mobley with Kim Skaja taking charge of publicity. The students and many adults have worked hard to ensure the success of this year's show. Hobos Get A Job!?
Tickets are available at the Church office.
Kyle Williams, Tim Hoeft and Eric Ruth are shown rehearsing for one of the numbers in the Hobo Show to be held at the Congregational Church May 4 and 5.
