School Hires New Business Manager       First Graders Say "Follow the Yellow Brick Road"

School District 158 has a new business manager. At their regular meeting on May 16th, the Board of Education appointed Mr. Loren Lemmon to fill the new position of Business Manager. Mr. Lemmon is scheduled to begin his duties on Monday, June 10th. Although Mr. Lemmon has no experience in school business management, he has ten years
experience in private sector management and ten years experience in classroom teaching. He is certified to serve as a chief school business official in the State of Illinois.

Archeological Dig in Rural Huntley
Elgin Community College is offering students an opportunity to join others from colleges in the Midwest at an archeological dig from June 17 through July 11 in rural Huntley.
The project area includes two archaic period sites dating from 3,500 to 10,000 years ago. The sites were found during a survey done by the Midwest Archeological Research Services (MARS) as part of the pre- development of the area for construction. The dig is offered in cooperation with MARS.
To participate in the dig you must register for two courses, ATR 230 Field Archeology, a three-credit course, and ATR 180 Lab Methods in Archeology, also a three-credit course. The classes will be combined for all-day
outdoor site work from 8:30 am to 4 pm Monday through Thursday, with a break for lunch.
The students can expect to find stone tools and instruments used to make the tools. They will excavate, sort, wash and inventory the artifacts, as well as count, weigh and describe their findings. Students also will search for fire pits and storage pits that will indicate what the people ate, as well as preserved bones, both human and animal. There will be informal lectures at the site so students can understand what they are doing and discovering.
All artifacts found in the dig will be curated at Northwestern University.

Legion, Auxiliary Essay Winners

The Americanism Essay Contest' co-sponsored by the American gion and American Legion uxiliary Unit 673. The topic of the essay for 1996 is "United We Stand For the Red, White and Blue." We had one essay from 9th grade and 15 from 11th & 12th grades.
The first place for 9th grade is Jordan Webb. His essay was rated 3rd place in the 11 th district.
The first place for 11th & 12th grades is Jessica Kittel. Her essay also rated first place in the 11th district and is sent on to state competition.
Second place winners were Matt Drufke, Scott Dvorak and Hanns VonBosse. Third place winners were Beth Ketchmark and Joshua Skaja.
These essays were very interesting and a real challenge for our judges to select a winner. We want to thank Miss Lid of the Huntley High School for her cooperation, our judges, and the students for participating.

On may 16th the entire first grade class of Huntley Grade School did two performances of the "Wizard of Oz" play.
In just a few short months these 135 first graders did a fantastic job at mastering dialogue, songs, and a number of dance movements. Their costumes were delightful and so "authentic" as to fit the various
characters they portrayed.
Through these months of practice, the students were guided under the direction of their five teachers - Mrs DeLuga, Mrs Juergensen, Miss Komos, Mrs Kowalski, and Mrs Volkening. The music direction of the play was by Mrs Tirk, grade school Choral Director. Thanks so much to all of you for the excellent work you did with the
students!
Behind the scenes many parents helped with costume making, prop building, and many more jobs - too numerous to mention. We wish to thank each and every one of you for your help and assistance in making this play the success that it was!
Congratulations to all of you first grade students on a job well done! We're so very proud of you!
Caramel Day a Sweet Success

The Huntley Lioness enjoyed a beautiful day for the annual Caramel Day on Friday, May 3. Over $1,200 was raised by the Huntley Lioness. Funds raised through Caramel Day help the community and state to support those with vision and hearing problems to help them lead fuller lives.
