This contest will spot light those residents that contribute to the town's atmosphere through their care and nurturing of the plants in their yard. Anyone whose mailing address is Huntley is eligible to enter the contest. Homeowners may stop by or call The Growing Scene, Inc. to register for the contest. Everyone is encouraged to enter! The Growing Scene, Inc. is located at 17009 Harmony Rd., near Rt. 20, west of Huntley. Their phone number is 669-0023. Residents need to register by July 16. Judging will take place July 23 and 24. Gift certificates from The Growing Scene, Inc. will be awarded for First, Second and Third places. The winning yard picture will also be published in The Huntley Farmside. Call to sign up today! The McHenry County Fair Whether your passion is cut glass celery vases or quilts or hand-carved decoys, there is still time to enter your prized antiques in this year's McHenry County Fair. According to Antique Superintendent, Jane Dahm, categories range from glass, jewelry, paper goods and pottery to clothing, kitchen utensils, pottery and a wide range of miscellaneous items. Judging this year's entries will be antique dealer William Durham of Belvidere. A dealer for 28 years, Durham has been a collector for more than 40 years. The total amount of prize money is $744 which will be split among the winners in each category. "Not only will you be able to show off your prized antiques," Dahm said, "but you stand a good chance of being richly rewarded as well." Dahm said about the only criteria for entering the show is that the items must b e at least 50 years old. "That means anything dating back to the mid-40's is acceptable." Entrants must be registered by Friday, July II, Dahm said. For more information, prospective entrants can call the fair office at 815-338-5315. Attention The Huntley High School class of 1977 would like to invite the '76 & "78 alumni and their families to join them for a picnic at Deicke Park in Huntley on Sunday, July 13, 1997 at noon. Please bring a dish to pass and meat to grill. Grills will be provided. Games and activities are planned for the kids. Don't miss out on the fun. Hope to see you there. Location Change For Boys' Basketball Camp The Boys' Basketball Camp scheduled for July 14-16; July 21- 25; and July 26, 28-31, will be held in the old Huntley High School gym, NOT in the new school as previously published. "Barn Again" Opens July 13th At Historical Museum The home made baked goods sale is just part of the old fashion fun at the 13th Annual Heritage Fair to be held Sunday, July 13 on the grounds of the McHenry County Histohcal Society in Union from 10 am to 4 pm. This year the festival celebrates "The Year of the Barn" and will open the "Barn Again" traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution. Pioneers Hold Flood Relief Drive By Brandy Lanius The Huntley Pioneers 4-H group is holding a Flood Relief Drive for the people of North Dakota and South Dakota and we'd like your help. We will be holding the Flood Relief Drive from July 7th through July 18th. The drop-off point for any donations you would like to make will be at the Grafton Township building on Vine Street in Huntley. Drop-off times are from 9am until 2pm, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Primarily, we are looking for donations of cleaning supplies. They have a lot of rebuilding to do, and that means there is cleaning up to do as well.'They need rubber gloves, rubber boots, garbage bags (all sizes), paper towels, and any type of cleaning supplies you can imagine. They are looking for children supplies as well. School starts in about six weeks and they school supplies, such as pencils, folders, and paper. They also are looking for baby items, such as diapers and baby wipes. Donations of food are acceptable, but please be sure they are non-perishables. We implore that you do not make any donations of fumiture or clothing. Many other organiza¬ tions have had drives for that and the flood victims are getting more fumiture and clothing than they can handle. If you would like to make a cash donation, please make the check payable to the Huntley Pioneer Fund. You have the ability to help the ones whom are less fortunate, so please help us help others. Amid the old fashioned activities of the historical society's annual Heritage Fair, the Smithsonian Institution's traveling exhibit, "Bam Again" is scheduled to open July 13th and begin its 6 week stay at the McHenry County Historical Society's museum in Union. Funded, in part, by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Smithsonian Institution Special Exhibition Fund, "Bam Again" celebrates the American bam and its influence on this nation's cultural history. The Illinois Humanities Council coodinated its placement at 4 sites in Illinois. The opening ceremony on the 13th begins at noon when County Board Chairman Dianne Klemm does the official honors following a welcome by Union Village President Angelo Guerrero. Declared "The Year of the Barn" by the county board and many townships and municipalities, 1997 is seeing lots of county-wide barn related activities including a barn art show during July and August at the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock, bam stories at the Illinois Storytelling Festival at the end of July in Spring Grove, the McHenry County Fair booklet tribute and the creation of an original "Year of the Barn" quilt featuring historic McHenry Co. barns to be hung at the government center. These and other activities hope to focus interest in bams as a local as well as national treasure. The auction at the 13th Annual Heritage Fair on the grounds of the McHenry County Historical Society in Union will be held from 10am to 4pm and will again be a highlight of the fair. A wide variety of antiques, collectibles and art will be offered to the highest bidder. All items are donated to the Historical Society especially for the auction. Among the many interesting pieces offered will be a turn of the century milking stool donated by Crystal Lake Attorney William J. Cowlin, a signed watercolor print of a bam and silo donated by Wood N' Things of Woodstock, a framed "Dead Man's Hand Collection" featuring reproduction memorabilia to Wild Bill Hickok donated by Crystal Lake Mayor Robert J.
