Officials say 2 schools, addition needed to house more students

As long as the student- population growth continues, so will Huntley School District 158's work to pursue money through referendimis.
The School Board met last week to discuss plans for the November 2000 election. The meeting came less than a year after an $18 million referen¬ dum was approved by voters to build two new elementary schools in the district.
While the task of seeking additional money from tax¬ payers and making plans for new schools likely can be ex¬ hausting, District 158 Super¬ intendent Jeny Hartley is at least keeping his sense of humor.
"We'll be back, just like
Freddy," Hartley said about school officials' plans to pur¬ sue referendums every even- numbered year imtil the in¬ creases in student population either halt or slow down.
The School District is now planning to seek money for the construction of an ele¬ mentary school and a middle school at the Reed Road campus. The November 2000 referendum also likely will in¬ clude plans to build additions at the Harmony Road campus.
Hartley estimates that the projects would cause the dis¬ trict to seek about $30 million from voters in November 2000,
The district's projections on student-population increases explain the need for more bricks and mortar, Hartley said.

Local firefighters have been on a number of extra calls this week.
Fortunately, they are not responding to fires, but rather the need for some of Hunt- lej^s youngest residents to be aware of what to do in case a blaze begins at their home or school.
"We're trying tp commu¬ nicate as many messages to
students as we think that thejr'Il listen to and reme¬ mber," Huntley Fire Marshal AI Wiesneth said. "Hopefully they'll bring the advice home to tiieir parents too."
Oct. 3-9 is Fire Prevention Week across the country. It is held every year at this tune to remember The Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 9,1871.
Wiesneth and Huntley fire¬ fighters planned a number of special visits to area schools this week to give children tips on fire prevention and fire ¦ WEEK, Page 2
Department soliciting funds for Safe House

Despite all the programs scheduled for this year's Fire Prevention Week, there is one thing missing: the popular Safe House.
Borrowed in the past from the Wonder Lake Fire Dis¬ trict, the Safe House pro¬
vides children with the firsthand experience of see¬ ing what it is like to be in a buming building.
The Huntley Fire De¬ partment could not borrow the Safe House this year. By next year, the department hopes to buy one of its own.
The Safe House is two- story mobile trailer that emits a nonhazardous
"smoke," allowing children to practice fire-safety measures in a simulated
fire.
"It is a great way for children to get practical experience in case of an ac¬ tual emergency," Huntley Fire Marshal AI Wiesneth said.
