School Board Minutes — see inside Parade of Mask Photos — see inside 35 cents The HimtleY Faimside Tliursday, November 5,1998 A Press Publications newspaper ar serving the Huntley community Volume 38 Issue 30 Vote close in Dist. 158 election Steve Brosinski Press Publications Two $9 million referendums to build elementary schools in Huntley and Lake in the Hills appeared as of press time Tuesday evening to have been approved by school District 158 voters. If the two referendums were approved, School District 158 could now begin constructing new schools at the Harmony Road Campus in Huntley and on Reed Road in Lake in the Hills. The Harmony Road proposal had strong support from District 158 voters, but the district's request to build a school on Reed Road appeared to have met more opposition. District officials said that no matter what the final results tumed out to be, they would continue to address concems regarding student-population growth and overcrowding. "Should only one pass, will still go for another referendum in the spring," said Jim Crabill, president of School District 158. School officials made the proposals in order to provide space for about 800 students in each school. Construction would begin this spring and be completed for the 2000 school year, when enrollment is expect¬ ed to skyrocket to another 1,000 students. Passage of the referendums would mean the district is eligi¬ ble for $5.4 million in state grants from a $324 million con¬ struction bond. The district would receive $2.7 million this fiscal year and the remainder the following year. Developer fees would kick in another $1 million. Voters were asked to pass ref¬ erendums that were twice nar¬ rowly defeated in the past. In March, a referendum lost by 18 votes, and a previous one failed by 22 votes last year. Home restoration project reveals detailed glimpse of Huntley's past Steve Brosinski Press Publications When Kevin and Dawn Ellison began their renovation of the tum-of-the-century house on Lincoln and Main Street, they hoped to restore some of the home's charm that was lost from years of disrepair. But they had no inkling that hidden beneath layers of dust and cobwebs they would dis¬ cover some hidden treasures that would reveal a slice of Huntley's past. Two previous homeowners, one a minister and the other a judge, left behind a variety of documents that gives two wide¬ ly different glimpses of what life was like in town during the first half of the 20th century. Built around 1903, the nine- room brick Dutch colonial home was home to village magistrate William R Whittemore and later to Rev. Louis Baumgaertner, former pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. Baumgaertner bought the home in 1937, before passing it on to his youngest Photo by Steve Brosinski Dawn Ellison (center) and members of her family look through a journal found inside the home she and her husband, Kevin, bought in March and recently remodeled.
