Homecoming fever heats up
Steve Brosinski

The sight of students walking the halls of the Huntley High School campus in their pajamas Monday wasn't an indication of a more lenient dress policy.
Dozens of seniors wore their robes and PJs to school, not because they woke up too late, but to show their school spirit for School District 158's home¬ coming celebration.
A weeklong of events began with Sunday's Powder Puff Game and will be capped off when the Huntley football Redskins play against the Winnebago Indians on Friday. The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game.
While the Redskins will be looking for their first victory, the combined senior/freshman team barely beat their sopho¬ more/junior counterparts in the Powder Puff match.
"We scored our last touch¬ down when there were 22 sec¬ onds left," said senior Nina Hansen of Huntley, who was a nose guard in Saturday's game and-wore her bed clothes to school Monday.
Senior Amanda Shackelford said the 48-42 final score showed that the game could have gone either way.
"It was fun," said Shackelford. "Homecoming seems to be helping out a lot. During lunch, we were talking about events we were participat¬ ing in."
Many of this week's activities will take place Thursday prior to the homecoming parade down Main Street at 1:30 p.m.
Shackelford said her class¬ mates are looking forward to one competition in which the winner gets to toss a pie into the face of a teacher. The winning team will be the one that raises the most money.

Fire Dept. marks Prevention Week
Steve Brosinski
Press Publications One week of stressing fire safety techniques will not pre¬ vent all deadly fires, but fire offi¬ cials believe that teaching fire safety tips may go a long way towards saving at least one life. Fire departments nationwide are commemorating Oct. 5-11 as Fire Prevention Week. Friday, Oct. 9, marks the 127th anniver¬ sary of the Chicago Fire.'
Members of the Huntley Fire Protection District spent this week talking to children in classrooms about ways to stay alive in case of a fire.
"I think it is a great
idea for families
to go over a fire
plan at their house
so they know what
to do in the middle
of the night."
Al Wiesneth
Huntley Fire Marshall
Firefighters visited preschool¬ ers at the Huntley Park District on Monday, teaching them about fire safety and letting them experience a real fire drill.
Fire Marshall Al Wiesneth brought "Sparky the Fire Pup," the real-life mascot of the National Fire Safety Council, along as an added treat. Tlie theme of this year's fire safety campaign is "Fire Drills: the Great Escape."
"These little guys are really enthusiastic," said Wiesneth.
Safety drills are especially important for younger children because they have a higher fatality rate than older people, Wiesneth said he will never for¬ get when a five-year-old Huntley boy died of smoke inhalation in 1994.
