Hannah Martin was recently honored for her 90th Birthday with a Presidential Birthday Card. Miss Martin is well known to Huntley residents as a school teacher in the Huntley District for 60 years. She taught Commerce in high school which consisted of Shorthand, Typing and Bookkeeping. Miss Martin recalled year past saying she enjoyed teaching the high schoolers. Her students used to compete in nearby towns and many times went downstate to Champaign for a statewide contest. She said that she like children but that today she doesn't always recognize them because of beards and mustaches. She retired from the Huntley school system in 1966.
Miss Martin began her teaching career in country schools. The first one was south of Huntley about 3 miles. Later she taught in a country school west of Huntley. She said that teaching in these schools was like being a member of a big family.
Miss Martin was bom on Sept. 30, 1887. She attended Huntley schmils, DePaul University and Northem 111. in DeKalb. She is keeping tabs on DePaul's 1st place Basketball team. During part of her teaching career, she cared for her invalid mother. She recalled that they lived near the cemetary and that she kept fit by walking to and from school. She said that is why she is in good condition today.
Many of her old friends such as Marion Conley are gone, but she stated that she is continually making new ones. Miss Martin is an avid reader especially newspapers and likes to do needlepoint. The Presidential birthday card was recommended by Ron Stroupe.
Miss Martin feels that every student should take typing. She said that in later years it could be invaluable. At the age of 90, Miss Martin is still a most interesting and excitine oerson.
