Winnie stated, "It was an experience she will long remember. Being there and being a part of it was much more that you could experience watching TV." Winnie and her family had a front row seat on the parade route. She told of the Bears arrival behind a mounted police excort, riding on top of the buses, while the ticker tape streamed down from atop of the Loop buildings. When the Bears reached the Plaza, balloons were released by the spectators which filled the sky with a multitude of color. She said it truly was an exciting experience. She said there were very little problems with people having to be arrested and any disturbances which did occur were on the fringe area. Winnie brought back ticker tape and many pictures which are on display at the American Legion. More pictures on insides pages. Seven Americans, six astro¬ nauts and the first private icitizen, were launched into q)ace at 10:38 am Tuesday Inoming. Seveny-two seconds later the space shuttle chal¬ lenger engulfed in a band of smoke disappeared ftom the planet earth. ¦' T!ie world stood in deep alienee as Mission Control public information commentor Steve Nesbitt uttered these last few words. "Flight controllers ueTooking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction. We have no down link" (communications.) Then silence. Observers watched on as the smoke disapated hoping to catch a glimpse cA the shuttle aad the seven Amerkaas aboard. There hopes and dreams turned to sorrow aad grief as no sign of life appeared, just tiny metal particules scattered the ur space. The crew and its shuttie had vanished out of thin air. Continued on Page 2 Fire Chief, Dave Veath, an¬ nounced today that a scam is being run in Huntiey. The chief stated that on Monday evening he had received several telephone calls from residents who had been contacted to make donations to the Huntiey Firemen's Retirement Fund. Veath stated that the solicitation is not being done by the Huntley Fire Protection District or the Firemen. He said that the Fire Department is a tax supported body and neither they nor the firemen solidt funds. He asks anyone who receives such a telephone call, to contact him at 669-5066 or the Huntiey Police Department at 669-2131 imme¬ diately. A similar scam is being perpetrated in Algonquin. Chief Richard Rossi, of the Huntiey Police Department stated that if those perpetrating this illegal solicitation of funds are apprehended - they will be prosecuted. John Hutsler was named Fireman of the Year, last Saturday, at the Huntiey Firemen's annual Steak Fry held Kt the Ijltntiey American Legion HaU. John and two other firemen's niaiii'" were submitted by a committee to the entire fire department who voted for the one each individual fireman thought should have the award. This is the first year that the fire department has presented an award such as this. In addition to Fireman of the Year, pins were awarded to members of the department for years of service. This also is another first for the Huntiey Fire Department. Following the dinner and presentation of awards, a dance was held at the Legion Home. More pictures on Page 3.
