DISEASED TREES IN HUNTLEY
Cottoney Maple scale has been reported wide-spread through¬ out th Village of Huntley and the State of Illinois. According to a Mr. Smith of the Department of Agriculture, the scale is a small crawling insect which attacks and sucks the sap from the silver maple tree. At the present time sc»le is insdde a white cotton cuccoon on this variety of maple tre& However according to Mr. Smith the insect will hatch in the early part of luly.
Mr. John Tures, of TuresNur- sery, stated tbat there was noth¬ ing known that would penetrate this cotton cuccoon. He added tbat when the insect hatched the affecte dtree shotild be sprayed with Malathion and then <iprayed again in ten days. Mr. Tures said that owners of affected t-ee^ wotild not know for a year if they had wiped out the insects. He added that in the spring of next year, before budding, trees could be sprayed with a mixture of Volek oil spray jmd Malatchion. He said at this time this mixture
would coat the tree so that when the insect attached itself and be¬ gan to suck the sap it would be all over.
Mr. Smith, of the department of Agriculture should start in mid-July. However Mr. Tures stated that hatching could take place sooi>er this year because of the extreme hot weather this month. He added to spray as soon as they hatch with Malftthion and oontinue on a weekly basis for several weeks.
Mr. Snvith cautioned tihat Mal¬ athion will kill honey bees and will burn carvaert junipers. He stressed that people should read the labels on the chemicals they buy bfore spraying. He said that most damage is done by people who do not read labels. He con¬ duded ttiat if cott«ny maple scale got heavy enough it could kill the tree. Malathion may be pur¬ chased at either Harware stare or McHenry FS store.
