To co-ordinate Halloween activ¬ ities of the community and becau¬ se of concem over the safety Of children during Halloween, Chief Ptak offers the following suggest¬ ions.
1. NEVER let small children go trick of treating alone. They should be accompanied by older children or adults.
2. Suggest that trick or treating be confined to their own neighb¬ orhood or to people they know
3. Request householders to give children factory wrapped or sealed treats only. Some may
¦ wish to give money in place of treats. No loose or uncovered ' candy, popcorn, fruit or other , goodies.
4. Urge children to wait until returning home to taste their treats so that they can be inspect¬ ed. Report any unusual or suspic¬ ious treats to their parents. Save the treat and remember where you got it.
5. Ask households which want to participate to keep exterior or porch lights On that evening. Advise children to go to only go to homes with lights on.
6. Warn against the wearing of vision restricted Halloween mas¬ ks or other head coverings by youngsters. Use colorful facial makeup instead.
7. Advise children to Wear costumes which are light iri color, short enough to prevent tripping and non-flammable. Costumes can be covered with reflective tape or "glow" spray paint so that auto headlights can see them.
8. Children should carry flash¬ lights after dark. If a pumpkin is carried is should not be lit with a candle. A battery lighted device should be used instead.
9. Children should be advised to: 1. Cross only at comers, never between cars and never diagonal¬ ly across an intersection, 2. Watch for and obey traffic lights
and signs 3. Look in all direction!: before crossing a street 4. Walk never run across a street 5. Use sidewalks, not the street fbr walking (in rural areas where thef are no sidwalks, children shotild walk against on coming traffic. 6. Wait on the curb, not ofl the street, until the street is clear to cross.
10.Warm Motorists to etercise . extreme caution on Halloween because of extra "spook" traffic.
11. Suggest that neighbors might organize block parties in ' place of trick or treating.
