COME TO THE MC HENRY COUNTY AUGUST 4-8 Even though it is Vacation time for the Huntley High School Band, they will be ready for the parade on Saturday August 14lh. Huntley Schools have always had students that were interested in music. Many interesting groups have performed over the years for special functions. Following is a History of the Bands of Huntley whioh was written for "THE CHEF", a school newspaper in the early I930's. After having heard the High School Band of 1951, let us go back several years to see how the bands and orchestras compared and leam something about some of our music teachers of previous years. About 1920, Miss Helen Larkin came here to teach, and at that time the school had a very small orchestra. They probably played the same marches but in an entirely different style than our bands play today. Miss Larkin is now teaching in Chicago. The following years brought to Huntley, June Judy and Miss Froelich. They continued until Miss Seeor came. Miss Secor began the rhythm band in the grade school which continued for several years. Miss Foster then became music teacher and can be remembered by some of the older people as a beautiful singer and one who was able to hh all the high notes. A never-to-be- forgotten bundle of energy was Mrs. Beatrice Timmis who stayed with the band for about ten years. (Note: Mrs. Timmis still lives in Iowa). The orchestra grew rapidly and was playing for several occasions. Out of this group came Huntley's own little dance orchestra called "Les and His Melody Five." It consisted of Les Ewert, Rusty Haines, Rita Boncosky (Brunschon), Bernard Mackeben and Louise Brunschon (Kreutzer). (Editor's note: The group played for dances up in the Community Hall which is now above the new furniture store and was also known then as Pabst Hall). Miss Helen Quinn and Mary Louise Gray were our next music instructors. Miss Gray took Arthur Norman Jr. to the State Contest and then to the National School Music Festival at Flint Michigan where he won very high honors in the clarinet division. The next teacher, Mr, Kuntz was followed by Miss Schuett who had the energy of two people. She conducted the band and marched right along with them even in the Decoration Day Parade. Miss Zenk came to Us after Miss Schuett married. She was also a vocalist. She was followed by our present director, Mr. Joseph Ciontea. He is very well liked and we hope he will stay for a long time. (Note: Mr. Ciontea now directs in one of Elgin's Schools and is married to the former Mary Johnson). Perhaps in another thirty years, we will look back and remember how our music teachers led the band and orchestras through the years. Written by Jane Kreutzer (Shacklee) about 1933.
