MRS. ROY CONLEY MOTHER OF THE YEAR
Mrs. Roy [Mary] (Donley of Rt. 1 Huntley was selected 1964 Mother-of-tlie-Year by a panel of four out-of-town judges on the basis of a letter written by the daughter Connie Conley 16 years old. First runnerup in the contest went to Mrs. Robers [Mabel) Sch¬ ultz. Honorable mention were in alphabetical order: Mrs. Joe [Margaret] Hemmer, Mrs. (Tlar- ence Kopsel, and Mrs. Elmer Ur¬ bach.
Reprinted below is the prize win¬ ing letter.
My mother has never won an Emmy Award, nor written a Pul- tizer Prize winning book, nor can She even claim to her name a championship medal for any sport at all. One might say she is an "average" housewife and mother, but Icannot agree. Perhaps she ^ a ''common hc«sewife and mother", but she is not average. As a seamstress and cook her work is consistently "blue-ribb(m quality". As a lauijfcsshe passes the "whiteness te^P^th excell¬ ent ratings. [I know because I Judse titeml. As an unsalaried chauffeur and maid «he Is above average m willinn^s, dieerful- ness, and "gettingMI job done". Her shoppuig abilitFand "eye for bargains" is indeed commendable. Her premoniteons are almost always a "sure ber". Besides all this my mother is a "real human being." Everyone knows her a- round our house because she's the one who "is full" when there are six pieces of pie for seven people, and the only one to say, "Happy birthday" while everyone else forgets. She is the one who laughs at a "not so hilarious" joke and the one who quiets the mockers when you've just "laid an egg." She's the one wiio saves that important note or coupon lying on the stairway and the one who says, "I'll do it for you" when you're pressed for time. She's the one who says, "Oh cheer up" and always gives the best ad¬ vice when yau're stuck. Shhe's the one who slips you a dollar or two when you're broke. Yes, everyone knows her around our house. She plays her roll better than any Hollywood star could and says her words better than any writer — Thats' my mother. To me she is mort than a "mother of the year", She is a "Mother of a Lifetime."
Connie Conley — 16 yrs. old

This community has a problem — ;i partially solved problem- Time alone has ddne practically nothing for it. It isn't likely that time alone will ever help the situation, but on the contrary, may ^^^s floundering more and more.
A few years ago the most urgent ..-ed of this community was a Doctor. There was a great deal of conversation about it which eventually ripened into action, and it wasn't long before the work horses began getting results. Everyone was enthusiastic and funds were pledged to build a medical building, and soon steps were taken to attract a Doctor- The result, as you know, is a very fine medical building, built on the strenght of the funds collected and those pledged. The committee was so optimis¬ tic that the building was completed although all funds were not collected and all the funds pledged were never collected. It became necessary to encumber the building, and it is now necessary, if we want to retain it for the purpose for which it was intended, to pay the encumberance, which is $12,000.00.
Who should pay for it? Most folks who subscribed and paid for their stock will feel, I am sure, that they have done their part. That, perhaps, as a purely business is true. Sometimes, however, it becomes desirable to bail out a sinking boat, if the timbers are sound, rather than let it sink and mabey reclaimed by others.
Whether anyone should subscribe further toward the completion of the project is a personal choice. However, I feel that the people who gave their word to purchase stock will do so. Perhaps they were not approached again after making the pledge to pay the subscribed amount. The committee was very busy and, as you know, there were many chores to be done and only a few people to do them. In a matter of this kind, it is so easy to heap extra burdens on the proverbial George.
It also appears that there are many peaple in this community who were not asked to help and there are others who did not live in the community at that time- I am sure there is not a person in the Village of Huntley or in the surrounding country side who is not grateful for the medical building. Doctors are not plentiful, as you know.
The former Board of Directors should have the gratitude of every person in this community.
We are now asking you to help us complete the job. Inclosed is a subscription card for your convenience. Shares of stock are available in $25.00 denominations. However, we wili appreciate receivinje any amount that you care to contribute.
