Former Huntley residents Garnett Jones (left) and Elmer Krause shared life experience stories with Huntley Brownie Troop #46 during their visit to Florence Nursing Home in Marengo.
Brownie Troop Visits Nursing Home
By Sue Lamb
On Wednesday, Sept. 28, Huntley Brownie Troop #46 visited Florence Nursing Home in Marengo. Former Huntley residents Garnett Jones and Elmer Krause graciously shared their life experiences with the girls. Although this was a requirement for their "listening to the past" try-it badge, it wasn't long before the girls and the other residents from the nursing home were sharing their own experiences. It was interesting, no, maybe even amazing, to leaders Cindy Botterman and Sue Lamb how quickly friendships started to develq).
This was the first of what will be monthly visits to the nursing home. The girls are planning a Halloween party in October; Thanksgiving in
November; and of course a Christmas party in December; January they will help take down the holiday decorations; February will be a Valentine party; and in March a pampering party. The girls will pamper the residents by painting their nails or just playing games with the residents. For their end-of-the- year bash, the girls hope to have Dr. Robert James, a zoologist, visit the nursing home with a few of his furry friends.
Members of Huntley's Troop #46 are Kelsey Botterman, MeUssa Drafall, Kristi Erwin, Natalie Kohn, Monica Lamb, Jennifer Lamb, Lisa Ligmanowski, Lindsey Lombard, Heather Malo, Jessica Manning, Kim McCoy, Jenna Montanye, Molly Parker, Kelly Sheehan, Ashley Taylor and Amy Wills. Leaders are Cindy Botterman and Sue Lamb.
The Huntley Fire Department would like to invite everyone to its "Open House" on Sunday, October 16. It will happen at the Huntley Fire Station, 11808 Coral Street, between 1pm and 4pm. The open house is being held in honor of Fire Safety Week, October 9-15.
For the children there will be a "smoke house." This is designed to inform young children what to do if fire breaks out in their home. Firemen will be there to
instruct them what to do and to answer their quesions.
From the office of the State Fire Marshal, a special agent/investigator will demonstrate how "Nikki", the fire dog, is used to search for flammable Uquids in possible arson fires.
Fox Valley Fire and Safety will instruct and demonstrate the use of fire extinguishers. NFPA and State Farm Insurance will be handing out fire safety information.
In addition, Juvenile Fire- stoppers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. And, as always, the Huntley firemen will be glad to answer questions on the equipment which will be on display.
Refreshments will be available and many door prizes will be given away to attendants over 16 years of age. Plan to come and meet the firefighters that serve you and your community.
HFPD Begins Juvenile Firestoppers Program
By Margaret Strohfus
Very young children are attracted to fire and to fire- setting. Curiosity about fire is quite normal for 3-7-year-olds. Children often show this interest and curiosity when they light fires, play with matches, lighters or candles, or when they decide to imitate adults who light cigarettes, candles or fireplaces. Children do not undo'stand the destructive consequences of fire. To the child, fire is considered to be bright, warm and exciting.
The Huntley Fire Protection District has estabUshed a Juvenile "Firestoppers" Program. The program is designed as an educational tool to assist parents to confront this problem behavior in their child. The program does not and will not
pretend to be the solution to a child's fire-setting tendencies. Children who have participated in Juvenile Firestoppers programs have received positive benefits and incidences of repeat fire- setting have been significantly reduced.
Our main objective is to reduce fires set by juveniles in our community. Educational intervention and counseling are the methods used to achieve this objective.
If you have any questions regarding the Huntley Fire Protecfion District's Juvenile "Firestoppers" Program, please feel free to contact Marge Strohfus at 708/669- 5066 fOT further information. There will be a display at the Huntley Fire Protection District's Open House on
October 16,14pm.
Fire fascinates, may frighten and even terrify us, whatever oiu" age. Fire was and is critical to human survival on earth. Fires have caused indescribable destruction and death and will continue to do so unless people develop a greater api»eciation and respect for its hazard cq}abiUties.
While it is not unusual for people to find fire interesting, there are nwmal, typical ways that children and adults think about and use fire.
Appropriate use of fire may become a problem at times because of the person's lack of skills, lack of knowledge and/or lack of common sense or good judgement Ignorance,
