After an Illness of Eleven Dst* C. VanTine Crosses the Greet Divide
After an illness lasting eleven days Alfred Cheeabrough Vun Tine, aged 75 years, 2 months and 10 days, died at his bome on West Nortb Avenue at 9:15 o'clock p. m., November 29 1916.
Mr. Van Tine was a Civil War veteran and was afterwards married to Miss Emma Almlra Durkee in Sandusky, Ohio, In 1867, where they became steadfast members of the Methodist Episcopal church. They came to Flora In 1898, moving from their farm In larkinsburg township. He was prominent in the city's civic and business life, a member ot the city council when the new city hall was built In 1904 and mayor of the city in 1905 and 1906. The deceased Is survived by'his wife and daughters Mrs. Mary Yerkes of Raymond, III., Mrs. Julia Yerkes of Los Angeles. California, Miss Georgia Van Tine and Mrs. A. V. Gentry of this city, fourteen grand children and also «reat grand children. He retired from public activities several years ago but nevertheless has kept up his keen Interest In the affairs of the city. The funeral was held from the West North Avenue residence at 2:30 p. m.. Friday, Dec. 1, Rev. M. C. Poltl officiating. Mr. Van Tine's biography gives hU birth In Huron county, Ohio, September 19, 1841 •where Hiram Van Tine, the father died In 1850. His mother died at Van Tine's residence In Flora in 1899.
The son, after the father died, hired to a farmer for a number ot years, attending Norwalk Academy In the winter, flnally learning tele¬ graphy which he followed until Pres¬ ident Lincoln called for three hun¬ dred thousand men. Resigning trom the telegraph service he enlisted for the war at MonroevlUe, Ohio, in Company O 128 Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. With that com¬ mand he left for Clarksburg, West Virginia, and while In camp there was stricken with typhoid fever and was transferred to U. S. Hospital Cumberland, Maryland. In time he sufflclenlly recovered and rejoined hia company tn the mountains ot West Virginia. Captain Shawn, Co. K, same regi¬ ment having been assigned to duty as Provost Marshal ot Department of West Virginia with Headquarters in Winchester he applied to the Di¬ vision Commander tor a detail ot Corporal Van Tine to service at his quarters as chief clerk where he served eight months, not only with Capt. Shawn, but that ot two follow, ing Provost Marshals. The Confed¬ erate army of Northern Virginia un¬ der Gen. R. E. Lee moved north in June 1863 toward Gettysburg, and Winchester In the Shenandoah Val¬ ley fortlfled by 8000 men under Gen. Mllroy, Corporal Van Tine again re¬ joined his regiment. After three days' fighting Mllroy waa forced to evacuate the fort and entrenchmenlB around Winchester and escaped with only his bodyguard and part ot his cavalry. The Confederate Generals Hill and Longstreet soon had pos¬ session of all the roads and the 123rd Oblo, with several thousand men from New York, Connecticut. Massa¬ chusetts. Pennsylvania and West Vir¬ ginia were taken prisoners and hus¬ tled to Llbby prison in Richmond. From there Van Tine, with a number ot other prisoners, was transferred to Bell Isle prison in the James Rlv. er, near Richmond; from that prison some time in September he was pa¬ roled and a few weeks later exchang¬ ed, again rejoining
