Wagner, Law- I'enclM^hrf"^''''^' Thursday noon, Keb. 27,the Basket- tall team of the Harter-Stanford Cownshlp High School of Flora left for Lawrenceville. Coach Rodgers had developed the team into the best lorm of the season, and everything vas set to tight for the championship If the district. In the draw for lames Flora was tirst matched against Jewton, and from the dope (whleh later proved true) they would be re¬ quired todefeat Mt. Carmel, Bridge- ort, and Olney (after disposing of Jewton) in order to bring the glory |)f the championship to tbe old home jburg. Coach Rodgers was confident Ihat lie had the best team In the dis- Irlct, but as the element of luck had leen partially responsible for a few Jlefeats earlier in the season, (|uite a lew fans expected tlie old Olney Hoo- Jloo to return sliould Flora meet Ol- liey in the finals according to dope. The fe.im work of Flora in this game was lot up to the standard, but showed ligns of settling gradually into true Isrm and accuracy with whicli it was {maintained In each 'oUowIng game. At J:30 p. m. Friday Flora came on Ibe floor wltb the old time "PEP" Ind took the ball around the Mt. harmel lads so fast that It was evi¬ dent that the Orange and Blue boys looked like ten men to the rattled op¬ ponents. During this game Allen became so effective In team work and almost any other department of the game that as is often the case some one of the- opponents accidentally landed so hard wltli his right to tbe forehead that it shook the little speed merchant from his occipital to his phalanges. Coach Rodgers sub¬ stituted DutT for Allen tlie last ten minutes of play and the Orange and Blue continued to score. Young and Lusk playedsuch astardefensive game in this instance that Mt. Carmel did not score a field basket. Smith led the scoring for Flora with nine field baskets. He also led in spectacular shots, batting one through the hoop with his left hand tioof the side lines, just as he was stepping out of bounds and placing a neat long shot from the side and about ten feet back of the center ring. Final score, 31—2. This game undoubtedly showed that Lusk and Young were the best pair of guards In the tournament. Before the game Mt. Carmel was considered a strong contender. After the game the question was "what was the matter with Mt. Carmel?" The answer was "Lusk,Young and Wells." Tbe Bridgeport game Saturday af¬ ternoon was too rough to be called good basketball. However the Bridgeport team was underrated by most funs at the tournament and would have given some teams a hard game to retain second place, especial¬ ly if allowed to play as rough as tliey did against Flora. Flora won again— :tO-22. Allen was again tlie mark of some unintentional rough work and came near playing his last game be¬ fore the finals. By this time the little star liad won the hearts of the entire crowd and it looked as though the next one who attempted any rough stuff with him would be mobbed. It seemed tliat victory was due to perch upon the banner of the Orange and Blue. When at eight o'clock or there about Saturday niglit ('apt. Allen led tlie team on the floor with more pep than had been previously displayed in any game, the spirit of the two dozen Flora rooters was buoyed up never to droop again during the tournament. Flora was the popular team at the contest and a delegation from nearly every school in the district heartily supported the Orange and Blue In taking some of the ego and self Importance out of the Olney team. The whistle had hardly blown [itartlng the game when Allen tossed the first basket for Flora. This was followed almont Immediately with one by Stillwell for Olney. Flora got her team work under wayatthis time and from tliere on a great deal of Olney's work consisted in taking luck shots at the basket, several of which they caged, and in counting the num¬ ber of times Allen, Smith and Wells could shoot at tlie basket witliout hitting it, which finally began to amaze the aforesaid three themselves. The Olney team wasclearly played off One Hundred Donars Reward in Gold OLD OFFENDERS IN THE TOILS I have deposited at the Bank of Flora, Flora, Illinois, One Hundred Dollars ($100), payable in gold, to be paid to anyone who will furnish conclusive evidence that I wrote or pub¬ lished, or had anything whatsoever to do with the writing, publishing and mailing of a circular letter beginning, " What! Wells accounted for the last five points of the Orange and Blue's score and annexed tliem atthe proper time to put the game in the clear for his team. Young and Lusk put tlie brakes on the Olney team work so ef¬ fectively that they were unable to form any of their pretty formations. And the clever little Miller could not flnd time to make the grand stand plays that he was credited with In the Lawrenceville game. As the gun marked the end of the game the score was 18 to 10 for Flora. The game was very clean and was bitterly fought for by botli teams but the best team won. Flora placed both forwards on tlie all-star team. Now for the State Tournament. H.-S. Township Hi
