Extensive Oi! Test
In Clay County
Oil lea.stware now lieing laken in Songer lownsliip by C. F. Andeison wlio represents a large oil company of Pennsylvania. .Some two weeks ago Mr. Anderson had a large numlier of leases printed al the llecord otllce. and while iiere stated that the com¬ pany he represented had decided to give tills terriUiry a tliorougli test; but tlial no wells would lie bored al any point unless leases tor seven to ten tiiousand acres could tie secured in one iKidy: and that as soon as this was done, his company al Its own ex- [lense, would make a tliorougli test and one that would be sallsfaclury to the land owners.
IiKliiiry from Florn lirought a favor¬ able reply as to the oil company in tV^niisylvania. Tlie leases pro\ide that ,',; of all oil produced is to go to the land owner, and seem to be fair in tlieir provisions.
Mr. Anderson Informed us that leases would also be t;iken in llie vi ciiiitj of .\enia and Flora. It lieing llie couipany.s wL-h to secure options In ul least three poiiit.s in the coun¬ ty. Willie tliese ge;itlemen are strangers among us lliey come willi a business proposition, llial Is worthy of attention and might mean much for ttie future of our county.
AGED CITIZEN
Ferman Wildman Surprised
ll is a matter of sincere regret that the llecord editor was prevented from complying with a request lo Join a numlier of tlie friends of Ferman Wildman in a secret plot to go to Ids houie in North Hailer Tuesday la.st, for the purpose of giving him a liig surprise in lionor of his liirtiiday. We don't know which one ll was, and would not lell if we did, liecause Mr. Wilduiaii ii.is liad so many birtiiday anniversaries in Ids time liiey are too numerous to mention. We feel sure that each one Is reuibuibered by him as a delightful occasion In his life and lliat the pleasures of Tuesday's gath¬ ering was no ex.eption to htm and the friends present.
We liope Mr. Wildman may have a greater number of anniversaries in tlie future than tie has had tn the .past, and that each one will bring to iiim more pleasure, if thai be possible. We join cordially with Mr. Wildnian's great hosts of friends In good wishes and a strung hope llial he and his good wife may have many years of good health and happiness.
Conte, Gone and Much Pleased
Isaac 1). Powell of Flndley, Ohio, had a longing to see Southern Illi¬ nois, which lie had lieard of asKgypl, so some weeks ago, he said to his giKxl wife get ready and we will go to Clay county and visit your sister, Mrs. J. R. Habcock of Stanford town¬ ship: as these sisters "tt*^ nol seen each other for thirty seven years Mrs. Powell accepted the invitation with much pleasure. All prepera tioiis were made and in a sliort lime Mr. and Mrs. Powell landed In Flora and were surprised to see a modern little cily Instead of a run down little village; but a greatersurpriseawaited llieiii. when tliey were driven to the liome of Mr. and Mrs. J. 11. Halx'ock, for on the way they were shown tine farms, good houses and the largest orchards they had ever seen, instead of a liackwoods country, lliey had been expecting to see.
Mr. Powell was astonl.shed when he saw the tine apple trees loaded witii fruit and noted the beautiful lay of the land as compared lo that of bis own country. What was Intended as a short vi.slt was continued and made pleasant all the time tiy the cordial greetings of relatives and generous hospitality sliown them by the gixid people of Stanford.
To say tlial the meeting of the two long separated sislers was a pleasure does not express the real enjoyment both had in talking over tlieir girlhood days and telling each other of ibetr life journey. .Ml too soon the lime for departure came and last week Mr. and Mrs. I'owell had tfi reluni to their lioiiie taking with them the most pleasing memories of their visit, tl.eir many Mil friends and new ones made while here, and also of the splendid country tliey had seen and
organized und made a hard tight at every point.
In the tirst district Judge Duncan was elected to the Supreme liench over Judge Wnlson, who held llie of¬ fice by appointment from Governor Dunne. In the state a.s a whole the Republicans made big gains on the circuit tiench and now have a majori¬ ty of one on ttie supreme bench.
