Charleston Side Channel Reservoir TMDL
Progress Report #3
December 31, 2001
What pollutants do the TMDLs for the
Charleston Side Channel Reservoir address?
Illinois EPA (IEPA) will develop separate
TMDLs to address each cause of impairment in
the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir. At the
end of the process, the Charleston Side Channel
Reservoir will have TMDLs for phosphorus,
nitrogen, total suspended solids, and excessive
algal growth/chlorophyll a.
What activities has IEPA accomplished to
date?
The TMDL development process involves a
number of steps (see text box on this progress
report). To date, IEPA and its consultant, Tetra
Tech, Inc., have completed a number of the steps
necessary to generate TMDLs for the Charleston
Side Channel Reservoir. Provided below is a
detailed description of recent activities:
· Tetra Tech staff traveled to Charleston on
October 25, 2001 to obtain data from the
Water Treatment Plant.
· IEPA reviewed a report Tetra Tech submitted on the methodology to be used for TMDL
development. This is the second report that Illinois EPA received from Tetra Tech, Inc. The
purpose of this report is to describe the methodology that Tetra Tech, Inc. will use to develop
the TMDLs for the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir, including the method to incorporate
seasonal variations in the TMDLs.
· Invitations were mailed to residents and other interested parties regarding a public meeting
scheduled for January 17, 2002.
· A slideshow was prepared in preparation of the January 17, 2002 public meeting.
What are upcoming activities related to the Charleston Side Channel TMDL development
process?
· Hold a public meeting hosted by Illinois EPA. During this meeting, Illinois EPA and Tetra
Tech, Inc. will present the findings of the report mentioned above. Stakeholders living in and
around the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir will receive an invitation for this meeting.
This will be a great opportunity to learn more about TMDLs and give Illinois EPA your
perspective on the TMDL process. The meeting is scheduled for January 17, 2002. Watch
the web site for updates.
Object Description
| Title | Charleston Side Channel Reservoir TMDL: Progress Report #3 |
| Description | This report documents the analysis and findings of stage 1 of the TMDL development for water segments within this watershed. Water quality data are gathered by the IEPA, the US Geological Survey, and the USEPA. Illinois is required to identify water bodies that do not meet water quality standards and to determine the Total Maximum Daily Load for pollutants causing the impairment. |
