Charleston Side Channel Reservoir TMDL
Progress Report #2
September 30, 2001
What pollutants do the TMDLs for the
Charleston Side Channel Reservoir address?
Illinois EPA (IEPA) will develop separate
TMDLs to address each cause of impairment in
the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir. At the
end of the process, the Charleston Side Channel
Reservoir will have TMDLs for phosphorus,
nitrogen, total suspended solids, and excessive
algal growth/chlorophyll a.
What activities has IEPA accomplished to
date?
The TMDL development process involves a
number of steps (see text box on this progress
report). To date, IEPA and its consultant, Tetra
Tech, Inc., have completed a number of the steps
necessary to generate TMDLs for the Charleston
Side Channel Reservoir. Provided below is a
detailed description of recent activities:
· Gathered and analyzed available data from
Illinois and national databases to
characterize the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir and its watershed. Data collected and analyzed
included water quality, soils, flow, land use, weather, agricultural cropping practices, and regulations
(e.g., Illinois water quality standards).
· Assisted staff at the Coles County Soil and Water Conservation District in compiling a mailing list of
residents within the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir watershed.
· IEPA attended a public meeting on August 30, 2001 sponsored by the Coles County Soil and Water
Conservation District to discuss the TMDL.
· IEPA received and reviewed a draft of the Data Inventory and Water Quality Analysis report from
Tetra Tech, Inc. This report contains chapters on the following topics:
· Data sources
· Description of the waterbody and associated watersheds
· Climate and hydrology
· Inventory and assessment of water quality information
· Point and nonpoint source assessment
· Public participation and involvement.
Object Description
| Title | Charleston Side Channel Reservoir TMDL: Progress Report #2 |
| Description | This report documents the analysis and findings of stage 1 of the TMDL development for water segments within this watershed. Water quality data are gathered by the IEPA, the US Geological Survey, and the USEPA. Illinois is required to identify water bodies that do not meet water quality standards and to determine the Total Maximum Daily Load for pollutants causing the impairment. |
