Your GRADE Will Depend on
SETTING READINESS
A n umb e r o f c h a n g e s a r e
planned for the Illinois Vehicle
Emissions Testing Program, as
outlined in the last issue of Air Repair.
Improvements to the Repair Facility
Performance Report (RFPR) are also
planned to make the book easier to
understand and help motorists select
a repair shop for vehicles that failed a
test or were rejected for readiness.
The Repair Effectiveness Index will be
simplified, using a letter “Grade” instead
of the current percentage figure. The
report will be renamed the Repair Shop
REPORT CARD, and will include a
“Grade” (or Repair Effectiveness Index
– “REI”) for each shop that repaired at
least ten emissions failures during the
past six months and achieved at least
a “C” grade. The Grades will be A,
B and C: A = 93-100%; B = 84-92%;
and C = 75-83%. The Report Card will
indicate total number of successful
repairs (but not unsuccessful repairs.)
The Grade calculation will count retest
monitor rejects the same as test failures.
Factoring monitor readiness into Grade
calculations is an important step because
readiness is a clear indicator of effective
repairs. Outreach Seminars this year
will focus on ways shop owners,
managers and technicians can quickly
and efficiently set readiness monitors.
The northeast Illinois area (Chicago and
suburbs) will be organized into eight
zones, and the metro-east area will be
a separate zone. The Report Card will
be sorted first by zone, then by Grade,
and then by total number of repairs.
These changes – utilizing typical
school themes – should make it much
easier for everyone to understand and
use the report. Your shop’s individual
score (REI) will be your Grade and the
entire book will be the
Report Card—simple!
As we learned with
IM240, taking control
of the vehicle by
taking the vehicle
in for a retest will
result in customer
satisfaction, an “A”
Grade, and cleaner
air for everyone.
