The Illinois Green Fleets Program wel-comes
seven new members, bringing the
number of Green Fleets in this select
group to 24. A recognition event was
held at the LeMeridien Hotel in Chicago
on April 29 for those in the Chicago area
receiving alternate fuel rebates and be-ing
designated as “green fleets.” Renee
Cipriano, Director of the Illinois EPA,
handed out nearly $436,000 in rebate
checks along with the Illinois Green
Fleet designation plaques.
The seven new Illinois Green Fleets in-clude
the Chicago Transit Authority
(CTA), F. J. Kerrigan Plumbing
(Wilmette), the Forest Preserve District
of DuPage County (Wheaton), Under-writers
Laboratories (Northbrook), the
Village of Downers Grove, the Village of
Oak Park, and the Village of Palatine.
The CTA has 23 dedicated natural gas
vans, Kerrigan Plumbing, one of a grow-ing
number of small businesses in the
program, operates three natural gas-powered
vans, and Underwriters Labora-tories
currently has three natural gas
vans it uses in its vanpool program to get
some of its employees to and from work.
UL already has plans to expand its CNG
vanpool program. All of these fleets were
designated at the 1-Star level.
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage
County was designated at the 3-Star
level for implementing propane, natural
gas, E-85, and biodiesel in its fleet. In
addition, the Village of Downers Grove
(3-Star) is using natural gas and bio-diesel,
Village of Oak Park (1-Star) for
natural gas, and Village of Palatine (1-
Star) for E-85 and biodiesel. Read the

Green Fleets on the program website at

Quad Cities Getting into Green Fleets
The Quad Cities area is in tune to
cleaner fuels and vehicles, and a handful
of fleets are currently implementing
AFVs. The Bi-State Commission’s Air
Quality Task Force has made clean, do-mestic
fuels one of its priorities for keep-ing
the Quad Cities area in compliance
with the federal air quality standards
and a few of its members have taken the
lead. The Metrolink mass transit agency
has partnered with the City of Moline on
a natural gas program. Metrolink is pur-chasing
11 CNG buses this year and the
City is installing a fast-fill CNG refuel-ing
station that it will share with the
transit agency for refueling. In addition,
the City of Rock Island is looking to ob-tain
its own E-85 fuel pump for its many
E-85 vehicles. The momentum has even
crossed the River, with the City of Bet-tendorf,
Iowa incorporating biodiesel for
use in its larger diesel trucks.
